The author wisely and justifiably recanted her negative opinion when she saw Cruise's excellent performance, which perceptively addresses the pain and chronic melancholy that plagues anyone cursed with immortal bloodlust. Brad Pitt and Kirsten Dunst are equally good at maintaining the dark and brooding tone of Rice's novel. And in this rare mainstream project for a major studio, director Neil Jordan compensates for a lumbering plot by honoring the literate, Romantic qualities of Rice's screenplay. Considered a disappointment while being embraced by Rice's loyal followers, the movie is too slow to be a satisfying thriller, but it is definitely one of the most lavish, intelligent horror films ever made. --Jeff Shannon

Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee Specifications

With an acceptable balance of strengths and weaknesses, HBO's revisionist rendition of Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee can be recommended as a very basic (if slightly inaccurate) history lesson for younger viewers. It doesn't flinch from the harsh realities that were so passionately chronicled in author Dee Alexander Brown's enduring 1970 classic of Native American history, nor does it soften the brutality of violence between the U.S. federal forces and the doomed Native American tribes who fought to preserve their native territories, from the legendary battle of Little Big Horn in 1876 (depicted in the opening scenes) to the shameful slaughter of Sioux warriors at Wounded Knee, South Dakota, on December 29, 1890. Originally broadcast on May 27, 2007, and running slightly over two hours, this U.S./Canadian coproduction struggles to tell a story that would've been better served by a full-length miniseries (and will surely disappoint anyone familiar with Brown's important book), and the screenplay is so busy giving us a Cliff's Notes version of history that it lacks any particular focus or consistent point of view. Instead, we get a sobering, noble, and heartbreaking tale of territorial injustice, with forced parallels to the war in Iraq, full of admirable performances yet riddled with clichés and anachronistic details.

If you look closer, however, you'll find much to admire: Although his character was dubiously conceived to appeal to a contemporary white audience, Adam Beach (from Flags of Our Fathers) gives a fine performance as Charles Eastman, a Sioux doctor integrated into white society, who grows increasingly conflicted by the plight of his people. He's the tragic embodiment of the faulty ideals of Senator Dawes (Aidan Quinn), whose governmental effort to assimilate Native Americans leads to disastrous outbreaks of violence, depicted here with blunt-force realism. As Eastman's sympathetic and upright wife (a white schoolteacher with a strong sense of conscience), Anna Paquin makes the most of an underwritten role, and Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee is an impressive showcase for outstanding native American actors like August Schellenberg (as Sitting Bull) and Gordon Tootoosis (as Red Cloud), who bring obvious authority and conviction to their roles. The film is most effective when addressing the inevitable failure of the white man's well-meaning but ultimately misguided policies toward Native Americans. To the extent that we still struggle with the historical legacy of those policies, this flawed but instructional rendition of Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee can be viewed as a compact precursor to deeper historical study. --Jeff Shannon

Ushering in the age of the inferior sequel, Jaws 2 was essentially a license to print money. Indeed, the film did very well despite blatantly replicating the plot of Steven Spielberg's original, though to lesser effect. Roy Scheider returns as Martin Brody, sheriff of the small island town of Amity. Just as the beachside resort is rebounding from the previous movie's shark attacks, another great white is snacking on divers and water-skiers. Naturally, the town fathers don't want to confront reality and choose to proceed with a lucrative sailing regatta, resulting in a grisly loss of life. Besides the fact that director Jeannot Szwarc takes an impersonal, workaday approach to the film, Jaws 2 manages to be both stylistically flat and openly cynical about its commercial intentions. Of chief interest here is Scheider's performance, which wisely reflects the emotional fallout from Brody's last trauma in his obsessive behavior here. --Tom Keogh

With as big and advanced as video games are today, development time is much longer and the cost to construct the video game is higher. It is not unusual to see a development team of 100 people or more. And the advertising window for a lot of the games is very short. So the problem here is if your game (developer's) is competing against a free copy of itself, that could result in a lot of trouble for the people who made it.According to Shane Pittman, a former high-ranking member of Razor 1911 an online video game piracy ring.

"It didn't seem like stealing," he says. "Physically, I couldn't see an attachment to anyone."

As a result in late 2001, Pittman, working as an IT administrator in Hickory N.C. recieved a call from the FBI who were outside his home he shared with his wife and two kids that they had a warrant.

The FBI confiscated 7 computers and boxes upon boxes of burned CDs. Pittman pled guilty to copyright infringement and spent 18 month in a federal prison. Why would Pittman a husband, father risk so much in his illegal hobby? "Because it made me feel important," he says. "I wasn't a jock or one of the cool kids, but suddenly, I was the go-to guy. I could do stuff the average Joe couldn't."

Not all pirates like Pittman are good guys with a bad habit. Video games like "Spider Man 3" in which your bought for $4 you can get to level three then the game shuts down. The free copy of "Command and Conquer 3" was loaded with viruses.

Video games were one the the first pieces of software to be pirated, but it wasn't until movie piracy that the National Cyber Security Alliance took notice."Even though law enforcement has stepped up the pressure on pirates in recent years -- both at a federal and local level -- the industry still faces an uphill battle." Why, because much of the piracy that occurs happens outside the US which makes it very difficult for the US to touch them because their laws are so much different.
The video game industry will tell the average consumer that the typical video game is too big to download -- and most people will not wait for a 1-gigabyte file to download onto their home computer.This doesn't seem to stop people who want to download such large computer video games as Quake 4 and Grand Theft Auto.

Why do hackers do it, my guess would be the thrill to beat the system, to stick it to the man mentality. The problem lies that as long as there are peer to peer sharing networks out there, there is going to be pirated software.

Since Ahab is chasing the rare white whale, three false whales had to be constructed, two of which were lost at sea. For all the miscues, the film is amazingly controlled, and especially beautiful to look at: Huston and cinematographer Oswald Morris developed an unusual color process meant to suggest old whaling engravings. The director wrote the script with the science fiction writer Ray Bradbury, an inspired choice to adapt Herman Melville's epic novel. Richard Basehart plays the narrator, Ishmael, and Orson Welles provides a wonderful single-scene role as Father Mapple, declaiming the mysteries of the sailor's life in a thundering sermon. --Robert Horton

Now that summer time is just around the corner, many people are starting to dream about the sand and surf. Exotic beach destinations have always been a favorite go to place for the summer holidays. This 1982 movie starred Sean Penn as Jeff Spicoli, Phoebe Cates as Linda Barrett, Jennifer Jason Leigh as Stacy Hamilton, Judge Reinhold as Brad, and a host of other stars including Nicolas Cage, Forest Whitaker and Eric Stolz. The movie details the lives of young high school students in California. This is a true classic and can still be found on the airwaves courtesy of satellite TV.

Girls Girls Girls: Two words: Elvis Presley. Indeed, this flick starred the King himself alongside a host of pretty girls, boats and lots of beach. Made in 1962, this musical comedy, has Presley playing a penniless fisherman who dreams of someday owning his very own boat. Although HD technology didn't exist back in the day, this movie had more to it, then amazing special effects or great cinematography. It had Elvis.

Beach Party: Here's another classic that you're bound to find on one of your satellite TV classic movie channels. It stars, yup, you guessed it, the one and only Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello. This was the first of seven Beach Party films from American Internation Pictures. All the Beach Party movies in the series starred a bunch of young kids having fun sans parents or teachers, on the beach. Five Formats Of DVD Technology

Music consumers entered a new era in the 1980s, when they were first introduced to the digital medium of CDs. On the motion picture side, home consumers were glued to the VHS, i.e. video home system, tape until the 1980s. This was also non-digital but gradually the digital CDs replaced VHS in the late 1980s.

Movie companies were not happy with the CDs that were available and worked on various digital video formats to develop a product that would give improved visual and audio quality to the home consumers. The result was the development of the DVD. The DVD technology originated in the early 1990s and immediately entertainment giants like Time-Warner and Sony realized and agreed to promote the new high quality technology.

DVD stands for digital versatile disc although it is popularly referred to as Digital Video Disc due to popularity in the video industry. The main reason for the popularity and growth of DVDs is that DVD technology allows for the storage of a large amount of data using digital technology.

At present, a DVD offers about 480 lines of resolution, which is double the 20 lines of the VHS format. The 480 lines is best seen on a progressing DVD player which can convert the 40 interlaced video into a 480 line progressive format. The progressive display has a 31.5 kHz or higher scan rate. This eliminates all traces of scan delay and provides a more film-like picture.

DVD technology differs a lot from the CD, even though they are very similar in appearance. A DVD is made of a thin, circular wafer of clear plastic and metal measuring 4.75 inches in diameter with a small hole in the center. The thickness is 0.2 inches and two such discs are compressed together to create a double-sided disc 0.04 inch thick.

The digital data, which consists of the binary language of ones and zeros, is encoded onto a master disc and this master disc is then used to create self-copies. The coping is done by burning small holes, called pits, into a microscopic layer of metal, usually aluminum, with the help of a laser. These pits are the binary ones. Binary zeroes are the smooth surface of the layer of metal, which has not been touched by the metal binary zeros. After this, the metal is coated with a protective transparent layer.

The greatest trilogy in film history, presented in the most ambitious sets in DVD history, comes to a grand conclusion with the extended edition of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. Not only is the third and final installment of Peter Jackson's adaptation of the works of J.R.R. Tolkien the longest of the three, but a full 50 minutes of new material pushes the running time to a whopping 4 hours and 10 minutes. The new scenes are welcome, and the bonus features maintain the high bar set by the first two films, The Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers.

What's New?

One of the scenes cut from the theatrical release but included here, the resolution of the Saruman storyline, generated a lot of publicity when the movie opened, as actor Christopher Lee complained in the press about losing his only appearance. It's an excellent scene, one Jackson calls "pure Tolkien," and provides better context for Pippin to find the wizard's palantir in the water, but it's not critical to the film. In fact, "valuable but not critical" might sum up the ROTK extended edition. It's evident that Jackson made the right cuts for the theatrical run, but the extra material provides depth and ties up a number of loose ends, and for those sorry to see the trilogy end (and who isn't?) it's a welcome chance to spend another hour in Middle-earth. Some choice moments are Gandalf's (Ian McKellen) confrontation with the Witch King (we find out what happened to the wizard's staff), the chilling Mouth of Sauron at the gates of Mordor, and Frodo (Elijah Wood) and Sam (Sean Astin) being mistaken for Orc soldiers. We get to see more of Éowyn (Miranda Otto), both with Aragorn and on the battlefield, even fighting the hideously deformed Orc lieutenant, Gothmog. We also see her in one of the most anticipated new scenes, the Houses of Healing after the battle of the Pelennor Fields. It doesn't present Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen) as a savior as the book did, but it shows the initial meeting between Éowyn and Faramir (David Wenham), a relationship that received only a meaningful glance in the theatrical cut.

If you want to completely immerse yourself in Peter Jackson's marvelous and massive achievement, only the extended edition will do.

And for those who complained, no, there are no new endings, not even the scouring of the Shire, which many fans were hoping to see. Nor is there a scene of Denethor (John Noble) with the palantir, which would have better explained both his foresight and his madness. As Jackson notes, when cuts are made, the secondary characters are the first to go, so there is a new scene of Aragorn finding the palantir in Denethor's robes. Another big difference is Aragorn's confrontation with the King of the Dead. In the theatrical version, we didn't know whether the King had accepted Aragorn's offer when the pirate ships pulled into the harbor; here Jackson assumes that viewers have already experienced that tension, and instead has the army of the dead join the battle in an earlier scene (an extended cameo for Jackson). One can debate which is more effective, but that's why the film is available in both versions. If you feel like watching the relatively shorter version you saw in the theaters, you can. If you want to completely immerse yourself in Peter Jackson's marvelous and massive achievement, only the extended edition will do.

How Are the Bonus Features?

To complete the experience, The Return of the King provides the same sprawling set of features as the previous extended editions: four commentary tracks, sharp picture and thrilling sound, and two discs of excellent documentary material far superior to the recycled material in the theatrical edition. Those who have listened to the seven hours of commentary for the first two extended editions may wonder if they need to hear more, but there was no commentary for the earlier ROTK DVD, so it's still entertaining to hear Jackson break down the film (he says the beacon scene is one of his favorites), discuss differences from the book, point out cameos, and poke fun at himself and the extended-edition concept ("So this is the complete full strangulation, never seen before, here exclusively on DVD!"). The documentaries (some lasting 30 minutes or longer) are of their usual outstanding quality, and there's a riveting storyboard/animatic sequence of the climactic scene, which includes a one-on-one battle between Aragorn and Sauron.

Fantastic Director's Cut - T. Robinson -
OK, so I'm a bit of a fan. I caught all the midnight showings of the LOTR films. Then I got all the director's cut versions of the films. I'll keep this short because I'm probably preaching to the choir with the review. I WILL say that I liked how the book ended better than the liberties the writers took with this. Other scenes could have been cut to deal with Saruman's demise.

This movie only gets better through the years, with repeated viewings. Johnny Depp portrays undercover FBI Agent Joe Pistone, who infiltrated The Bonanno Family, one of the Mafia's Five Families based out of NYC. Based on the true story of Pistone, this movie, with Johnny Depp in the Pistone/Brasco role and Al Pacino as Benjamin "Lefty" Ruggiero, the mobster who takes Donnie under his wing, gets him into meetings and vouches for him (and in the Mafia, you'd better know who you're bringing 'in'), an already brilliant screenplay is blasted into the stratosphere by these two actors' portrayals. Depp is magnificent as Brasco, a man who has been undercover so long that he doesn't even answer to his real name anymore, telling people that he's more comfortable being called Donnie all the time - and it may be safer for him, too. Pacino's Lefty has just the perfect pitch of the sad-sack-never-going-to-be-anything-but-on-the-outside-looking-in hood; he plays a delicate role so successfully that you find yourself feeling for a man who acknowledges having done 26 hits, and the biggest thing he's gotten - no promotions, no 'ups' for this guy - is a real lion from Sonny Black, the boss of Lefty's crew. Michael Madsen, as always, shines when he's on the screen, and his turn as Black is an example of why, if I see Madsen's name on a DVD cover, I get the movie, no questions asked. Lefty takes Donnie and teaches him what to say and not say, what to wear, how to carry his money; he may not be a big enough guy to do anything really impressive for his new associate, but Lefty has a feeling of purpose through finding Donnie, and teaching him. The fact that Lefty also gets it across to Donnie that, in their world - and maybe the world in general - your best friend can also be your executioner seems to blow by in the script, but the viewer catches it, and realizes just how much Lefty truly is passing onto the new kid. All the while, Donnie is gathering evidence on Lefty and his crew, as well as all others caught in the net, and we watch as the agent begins to feel a loyalty to Lefty. He knows that when the shoe drops, and it's known who he really is and what he's done, the people who brought him into the circle will be walking dead men. Depp is right on the mark as the conflicted Brasco - he's still going to finish the assignment and catch the bad guys, but there is an unspoken understanding between Depp and the audience that maybe, just maybe Brasco will do what he's been ordered to do, but he'll find a way to help Lefty skate. It is the relationship between Donnie and Lefty that makes this such a unique mob movie - you can see shooting and beating the hell out of people in plenty of films on this subject. Very few gangster films pull off character studies successfully, and that's what makes this stand out above many others. The movie is pretty close to the facts - I don't want to give any spoilers here, and so I'll just say that even though the ending of the movie has a couple of the facts bent here and there, the writers and directors were right to do it the way they did. The supporting cast, beside the beforementioned Madsen, is superb - the wonderful Bruno Kirby takes every second of his screen time and makes it matter, and Anne Heche, playing Brasco's disillusioned and scared to death wife, puts in a turn that I was surprised affected me so much (I have never really been a fan of hers, I admit, but she's great, here). The direction, the mood, and even the music capture the situation and time - the late 1970s' - perfectly. "Donnie Brasco" came out right around a tv show called "The Sopranos" was getting ready to hit the small screen, and I wouldn't be surprised if the developers, writers and directors of that show got some pointers on mob life by watching this film a few times. I find nothing to complain about with this movie, and I hope that, through the years, it will become as respected and appreciated as "The Godfather" films...it deserves it. Lastly, just what does Johnny Depp have to do to get an Oscar????!!!!

Johnny Depp is superb as FBI undercover agent Joseph Pistone, infiltrator of one of New York's prolific mob families as Brooklyn boy Donnie Brasco. Based on the true story of Agent Pistone, this riveting film chronicles the harrowing years of servitude he endured as Lefty Ruggerio's (Al Pacino) protégé in Sonny Black's (Michael Madsen) Brooklyn crew. Al Pacino delivers the performance of a lifetime, rich with Pacino nuances; compelling both Donnie and the viewer to experience genuine love and affection for a petty thief, felonious criminal, and cold-blooded murderer with 27 executions to his credit. Their mutual camaraderie develops a bond that, to both their detriment, blurs the lines of character judgment, right, wrong, truth and deception. Supporting nods to Michael Madsen, Bruno Kirby, James Russo, and Ann Heche. This is an amazing story and an exceptional film that, dare I say, holds its own with the likes of Goodfellas. A 5 star must see; I highly recommend!
