Product Description
A four-disc RPG epic, The Legend of Dragoon is set in a time of swords, magic, and dragons. Ten thousand years prior, the Dragon War pitted Dragoons--humans with the power to control dragons--against Enslavers, magicians who sought to enslave the humans. Now Dart, a young warrior, is on a quest to find the demon that killed his parents. The Legend of Dragoon features prerendered, 3-D backgrounds and detailed, polygonal figures. Several nonplaying characters and many full-motion video scenes take you through the complex story. The game's turn-based battle engine allows you to increase the strength of an attack through repeated button taps and shows the percentage increase you've created. A timing feature in the battle modes allows you to add devastating combinations to your attacks. The Spirit Points you accumulate during your quest can be used to unlock a special power, known as the Dragon attack.
Editorial Review
Talk about going out with a bang! Sony Computer Entertainment released its four-disc The Legend of Dragoon for the PlayStation only months before the release of that console's successor, the PlayStation2. This very absorbing role-playing game, with hours upon hours of story and inventive gameplay, might just be the last great title for the glorious PSX.

The copious story begins with Dart, a vengeful young man with spiky hair and red armor who embarks on a desperate rescue mission to break his childhood sweetheart out of a castle prison. The two join forces with a knight who is trying to end a war that's destroying the region. Dart soon learns that he is a Dragoon--a human who's privy to the spiritual power of dragons. Like all RPG heroes, Dart is up against impossible odds, but his newfound Dragoon magic and battle skills go a long way toward making the bet even money.

And that's just the beginning. Grab a spare memory card and a comfy chair and be prepared to spend at least 20 hours getting through the first disk (there are three others just like it in the double-wide case). It's hard to sustain a player through this kind of time span, but The Legend of Dragoon takes chances and wins. For example, its battle system is turn based, so you can actually use some strategy, but it also features special "additions," or fighting combos that unfold if you match the X button to that addition's timing. When handling three players' additions, each with unique sequences, it can be quite challenging. You can increase the potency of the elemental magic up to 160 percent by quickly tapping X during your cast. Also, the perspectives often change between battles--players will direct the action from behind the heroes, behind the villains, looking down from above, and off to the side.

There are a couple downsides to the game. First, the stylized transitions into and out of battle mode, while initially cool, quickly become exhausting--especially when running the gauntlet through lesser foes in the wilderness or lower ramparts of a castle. The game's story is built such that you're watching the sometimes goofy dialog as a spectator rather than participating in it. There are a few occasions when the game will prompt you to choose from two different responses, but often either response will bring about the same conclusion. That tightly controlled narrative, however, often works in the player's favor by keeping the game flowing instead of the wandering common in other RPGs, where players waste time looking to each townsperson for direction.

Overall, the game's wonderfully illustrated sets, light exploration and problem solving, and a handful of jaw-dropping full-motion video scenes make The Legend of Dragoon fun to play and hard to put down. --Porter Hall

Pros:

  • Hours upon hours of story and gameplay
  • Turn-based battle made more exciting by combo-attack-style "additions"
  • Many different monsters, spells, weapons, and items
Cons:
  • Very linear gameplay offers no chance to affect outcome
  • Stylish pre- and postbattle sequences quickly grow tiresome

Let's Be Honest: You Have to Enjoy 'This Kinda Thing' (2009-01-16)
The problem with this game is that it doesn't work as the 'Final Fantasy Killer' (I like this game, and have enjoyed it more than any of the three Final Fantasy games I have played, those being the original for the Nintendo Entertainment System, Final Fantasy IX, and Final Fantasy X) unless you enjoy the additions and dragoon transformations.

The game is all about style. I absolutely LOVE gaining and performing each character's addition, building their dragoon levels, transforming, watching the mini scenes where they use their magic, and trying to get a 'perfect' on the Dragoon additions.
Combine that with characters I like, a story that keeps me wanting to see what happens next, and a focus on the absolute POWER of the dragoons and winglies, and I have a game that I consider the greatest Role-playing game in existence. . . to me.

Tales of Symphonia is probably 'technically' better. It has more replay value, more things to unlock, and more magic attacks. There is more to explore in general, and it is translated much better.

But if it were three years since I had played both games, and I was given the option, I would choose the Legend of Dragoon, because every part of this game is just plain FUN.

So, in short:

If you enjoy timing your button presses to make combos, transforming into impressive-looking dragoons, seeing a few truly astonishing cut-scenes, and seeing a story that IS interesting, (people say that it isn't original, but I have NEVER seen a story like this, ever, anywhere) then you will like this game.

If you just wanna press 'attack' and let it go, if you want TONS of magic abilities to unlock, or if you just take things too seriously and wouldn't be able to tolerate the poorly translated text, then you won't like the game.

Awesome beyond reason (2009-01-01)
This game, this legend of games is by far and i mean by far the best game for the playstation. If you do not have this game in your possession then you should get it. Of course it has its flaws but what game doesn't. I use to have two playstations, but somethings happened to them and i was forced to get a different game system, i was sorry for that. I got the regular xbox and was disappointed, yes the graphics are good, and the games are good, but when it comes down to it the new games are just not as fun, it would take less than a week to beat a game. Unlike the new systems playstation actually is the best i would say. Games like Final Fantasy and Legend of Dragoon take a very long time to beat and actually pull you into the game, they have story lines and great characters, out of all the games on playstation i would recommend this game over every one of them.

game as described (2008-12-16)
I purchased this game for my oldest son. He was worried that it would be all scratched up (as his original Legend game is). We were very pleased to find the game in the shape as described and the boys have been playing it for hours.

The Best RPG I Have Ever Played! (2008-11-24)
I first purchased this game in 2001 when it came out on the greatest hits. I often compare it to Final Fantasy, but there is really no comparison. LOD beats it hands down!

The seller shipped it to me factory sealed! Brand spankin new.

I am highly satisfied and relieved that I found this game again despite the fact that stores don't even sale PS1 games anymore.

I will continue to do my bargain hunting on Amazon.com.

not too shabby (2008-11-04)
Though touted as the final fantasy killer (why must all new hyped products be the (blank) killer?) this game falls well short of that. However don't let that stop you from playing it if you are a fan of japanese rpgs. The many flaws this game has can be overlooked since the battle system is generally engaging, fresh compared to other rpgs, overall good graphics, and a good way to pass the time in between more hyped games.
Some of the flaws include kinda weak graphics regarding the characters themselves, though background and cutscenes are really well done, odd monster designs, and linear nature of the game. The last point being a con for some people and a pro for others who want a straightforward adventure.

Amazon.com Review
Showcasing enhanced versions of the Super Nintendo classics Final Fantasy IV and Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy Chronicles is a must-have "retro" bundle for the serious role-playing game fan.

Originally released in the U.S. in 1991 as Final Fantasy II, the groundbreaking Final Fantasy IV introduced the "Active Time Battle" combat system that has since become a staple in the series. In addition to new computer animation sequences and minor gameplay enhancements, this reissue sports a new dialogue translation that is more faithful to the Japanese version and fleshes out the previously pared-down story of a conflicted knight and his quest for redemption.

Although not as well known as Final Fantasy IV--and not even part of the Final Fantasy series, for that matter--1995's Chrono Trigger is a nonlinear adventure game where players must travel across time to save a princess (and the world in the process). New Japanese cartoon cutscenes from animator Akira Toriyama (creator of Dragonball Z) grace the updated Chrono Trigger, and an extras mode (filled with game-related goodies that must be unlocked) has been added, increasing the already high replay value of this title with multiple endings.

Admittedly, the games' two-dimensional graphics and simplistic sounds are quite "last generation," which may turn off some younger gamers and recent converts to the genre, but their solid gameplay, deep storyline, and memorable characters are still first-rate by today's standards. --Joe Hon

Pros:

  • Brings together two classic Super Nintendo role-playing games
  • Retranslated text of Final Fantasy IV more faithful
  • Extras mode increases Chrono Trigger's replay value
  • New animated "movie" sequences
Cons:
  • In-game graphics and sounds are quite dated

Amazon.com Product Description
The two classic RPGs in this compilation not only represent hours upon hours of story, character, and action, they also present the background for two recent bestselling, critically hailed games: Final Fantasy IX and Chrono Cross.

With all the different names for the original 1991 release of the first title in this compilation (Final Fantasy IV in Japan, Final Fantasy II in the U.S.), role-players new to the game may get confused. Make no mistake, though: Final Fantasy Chronicles marks the first time this pivotal installment of the cherished game series has ever been available on the PlayStation. In Final Fantasy IV, players take on the role of Cecil, a loyal captain who questions the orders of his king, and for it is sent to slay a mysterious beast in a nearby valley.

In Chrono Trigger, Chrono must follow princess Marle's teleportation through time and locate her before an intergalactic parasite arrives to destroy the world. The original game, also on the PlayStation for the first time, was one of the first nonlinear role-playing games. The decisions that players make during the game will point them toward one of more than a dozen possible endings.

These new versions retain the authentic Japanese SNES stories and characters while updating their graphics and adding new full-motion video sequences and other features.

old schoolin.... (2009-02-20)
i remember saving up my allowances and lawn mowing earnings to buy my first super nintendo a long long time ago. the first game i bought when i bought the system was final fantasy 2 (which goes by the name final fantasy 4 in japan). i have very fond memories of this game and it is definitely one of the games that turned me into the rabid rpg and final fantasy junkie that i am today. anyone who has an appreciation for either of those two things should pick up this title based on that game alone.
chrono trigger has acheived cult status among rpg connoisseurs but i unfortunately have never had the opportunity to play it myself...until now. i did play chrono cross and i enjoyed that game so i figured it would be a no brainer to check out the game's ancestor. throw in final fantasy 2 (one of the greatest rpgs of all time in my book) and the more than fair price and you have yourself an awesome friggin deal!

FINALFANTASY CHRONICLES (2009-01-15)
Ok now these games are amazing I was reading some one star reviews lol omg there retarded they always compare ff games or rpgs to ff7 for one its not that great and for two why would you want it to be the same game I'm glad its different and the graphics on chrono trigger were way more amazing than ff7 and that's a fact chrono trigger was way before its time when you do spells your shirt and hair actually wave in the wind its really awesome so don't listen to the people that give it a one star review this game is amazing

drunk with nostangia (2008-12-16)
Loved Chronotrigger when it was on the old super nintendo. Still love it now.

Didn't play the Final Fantasy on the old system, but I'm enjoying it as well.

If you like the old RPG's, you'll like these.

One of the Best Games Ever (2008-12-05)
I haven't actually played this product yet, as it is a Christmas gift. However, I've been playing Chrono Trigger (through the use of emulators and ROMs) for over a decade. It is without a doubt one of the best games ever created. Even though its graphics are no where near as amazing as the games of today, its story and complexity are of a quality that is rarely, if ever, equaled. It has an endless amount of replay value given the multiple endings (11 or 12 I believe) and various side quests. This version of the game also has well-done animated cutscenes that are lacking in the original Super Nintendo version.
I have very little experience with the Final Fantasy series although from what I've played, they also seem enjoyable. Even if you're not a fan of Final Fantasy, the combination of the two games is well worth the price since I'd pay even more than this just for the Chrono Trigger game.

Note: Since this is a Playstation One game, there is a strong chance that it will not play on Playstation 3 consoles. However, there should be no compatibility issues with the older (and cheaper) Playstation 2 or Playstation One consoles.

Strictly a Chrono Trigger review (2008-10-14)
Since my semi-retirement from video games, I feel like I've lost touch with some of the new games of today. A lot has happened in my life (which is why you'll find a 2+ year gap between a couple of my reviews), and have focused on school and other things. But I've been meaning to get this review up for a long time, and it's high time I did that. I'll try not to go "nerdy" here, but this is my personal favorite video game, not only on the Super NES, but of all time.

I'm probably not the only one that shares this, as in a recent Nintendo Power magazine fans voted Chrono Trigger #3 most wanted game to be put on the Wii console, right behind #2's Super Mario RPG and #1's Terra-Gnigma. And it's also coming to Nintendo DS.

Chrono Trigger follows the tale of time traveling adventurers. Marle, the princess of Guardia, is whisked through time accidently by Lucca's transporter and Crono (the lead character who rarely speaks) decides to go and save her, which leads to a series of time altering events, new characters, and the ultimate final battle with Lavos. Lavos is the main villain, a parasitic life form that's been on the planet since the stone age and used the world's resources to allow mankind to evolve, thus empowering Lavos for millenia until 1999 A.D., when Lavos nearly wipes out the human race. We are introduced to awesome playable characters: Frog, formerly a knight named Glenn from the middle ages; Magus, a sorceror from the dark magical age that Frog seeks revenge upon; Robo, a robot from the future and turns against the evil robots and develops his own personality (a la Data from Star Trek). Lucca, Crono's friend, is a super smart inventor with a childhood regret. Ayla, a prehistoric babe that seeks retribution against the Reptites in the Prehistoric Age. And Marle, the future ruler of Guardia, and is swept up in a tale of high adventure and time.

The characters are very memorable and even if you were playing today, you'd be rooting for them during the game. Magus is out to destroy Lavos and is very narcissistic, especially towards Frog; Frog is a young heroic knight who carries the burden of failing to save Cyrus, his hero. Marle wants to be free despite her royal upbringing. Lucca yearns to correct her mistake of failing to save her mother from injury. Robo aspires to become more human and constructive, and by the end of the game, he'll be one of your favorite characters. Ayla's warrior-like personality may have you thinking impure thoughts about a Super NES character (and she's bisexual, in the original Japanese translation, LOL)... and Crono is the main hero and rarely speaks, but his heroic nature and adventorous spirit is the drive of the story.

There are many aspects of this game to appreciate. The intricate storyline with multiple endings might seem common now, but back then, it was practically unheard of. There's also some dark parts in the storyline (Frog having to avenge Cyrus because Magus killed him, Lucca feeling responsible for her mother's injury, etc.) as well as downright goofy parts ("Knights of the Square Table"? And what's with pouring soda on Toma's grave?). The music, mostly contributed by Yasunori Mitsuda, is considered a classic SNES gem and is actually the most covered game of all time on OCRemix.org (I think it's got 87 remixes, as of this writing). This soundtrack NEVER gets old. I read in an interview that Mitsuda had ulcers making the score and Nobuo Uematsu and Norika Matsueda had to finish the soundtrack (only a few tracks); he loved doing the score so much that he had ulcers. Hardcore!

Gameplay wise, it's relatively simple by today's standards. You've three of your characters in battle and depending on your combination, the double tech and triple tech combinations are different. I always found this to be unique, and haven't seen it utilized much in later games. The graphics were outstanding for the time; animated in a colorful and very Toriyama-esque style, its pretty smooth for a Super Nintendo game. The magic spells look fantastic, even in 1995 when this game first came out.

I didn't find this too harsh in difficulty growing up, and I still find it to be relatively easy. I think this is a definite plus because if you are a young pup and want a good dosage of RPG Heaven, then this would be a GREAT place to start. This is one of the rare games where the creators didn't want to make money off of it, nor did they want to make a turd for a quick buck. They spent time, energy, and enthusiasm on Chrono Trigger, and honestly, I think it shows. The storyline combined with awesome music, smooth gameplay, and emotionally-driven characters makes this a rariety. This game leaves you with a happy feeling and a sense of accomplishment for beating it (and if you're an old school gamer like me, nostalgia as well.).

Part of the reason I also love this game was because the friendships I've attained through this game, which might seem a little silly. But hey, it was 1996, and Chrono Trigger was caught in the "growing up" scheme of things.

Overall, I highly recommend this game, especially to the first-time gamer. It's not too difficult and it has a lot to offer. Now that it's coming to DS with a revamped translation (kinda like what they did with Castlevania Symphony of the Night...), it's easy to obtain. Or you can also find it on Final Fantasy Chronicles for PlayStation. Either way, this game is a must-buy... don't pass on the adventure of a lifetime!

Editorial Review
SquareSoft has always had a sure-fire hit when releasing any of their Final Fantasy titles, and Final Fantasy VIII should be no exception. The basis of a good RPG (role-playing game) has always been the story; spectacular graphics are secondary. Final Fantasy VIII's involved and interesting story line is filled with great twists, well-developed characters, suspense, and romance. As an added bonus, the graphics are beautiful. Everything--from the low-lit jazz club to the steam-filled railroad tunnels--is gorgeous and perfectly sets the mood and tone of a scene.

The game mechanics are standard fare for an RPG: acquisition of items and spells, turn-based combat, experience points earned in combat allowing advances in levels. From exploration to battles to dialogue, Final Fantasy VIII has it all. However, Final Fantasy VIII falls to that great weakness of RPGs: random battles. While necessary for advancing in levels, the battles occur with such frequency that they can grow annoying, making for a tedious game experience.

The epic storyline spans four discs--over 40 hours of gameplay--and is based around a mercenary cadet who finds himself caught up with an underground rebel faction. He winds up in a plot to assassinate the sorceress who has just seized power from the president.

You could complain of limited replay value, but this gripe is of no consequence: the game is such a satisfying experience, it doesn't require replay. Final Fantasy VIII is easily worth both the hype and the wait. You can't buy a much better game. --John Cocking

Pros:

  • A story to beat all stories
  • Characters worth caring about
  • Hey--it's from SquareSoft
  • Stunning animations
Cons:
  • Too many random battles
  • Combat is, as always, turn-based and offers minimal excitement
  • Weak souls might give up after two or three discs of play

REALLY REALLY GOOD! (2009-02-25)
I loved this game right off the bat, the first time I played it. It has a really good beginning, awesome music, and graphicx that are a step up from Final Fantasy 7 (tho FF7 was a HUGE step up from the previous games). So here's what I have to say about the game:

--It is a long game. You don't need to do everything, obviously, but 60-70 hours is not an unrealistic expectation

--The story is a little confusing because there's a lot of time-travel talk about people going to the future to stop a sorceress who goes into the past, possesses another person from the characters' present, and... yeah. But it's good. Also it's a good love story if you ask me--it's right up there with the stories of FF9 and FF10.

--You don't use MP. Instead, you "draw" magic (and occasionally summon monsters) from enemies.

--Yes, the summon scenes are long--but that's because the game is giving you the chance to "boost" the monster's attack. (I think you hold Select and rapidly press Square, watch the box in the corner, and stop when there's an x in the box)--but don't quote me on that.

--There are a lot of random battles and they do get a little annoying after awhile.

--The boss fight music is AWESOME! Actually, all the music in this game is awesome. Except sometimes the regular fight music. I've found myself stopping playing the game just to hum along with the music. Not a good strategy for a boss fight, :-P but it seriously is that good.

--The characters are pretty well done; their costumes are neat and not too outrageous, and there's a pretty good level of humor throughout the story too, even during the end scenes. So if you have never played this game, I seriously suggest you give it a try. Thank you for reading this.

FFVIII OWNS! (2009-02-13)
Final Fantasy 8, next to FF7 is probably one of the best games I've ever played. I recommend everyone give this game a try!

Different, but great (2009-02-12)
Although I STILL have not finished this game (due to people erasing my saves, messed up copies, and losing memory cards), this is one of my favorite entries in the Final Fantasy series for a number of reasons.

-The magic junction system, although frustrating at times (excessive Drawing), is very innovative
-Drawing Summons from bosses is brilliant
-No need to manage a ton of different armor/accessories
-The card game was the best addition to the genre, especially with the added element of modding the cards into items (despite the annoying rules that can creep their way in)

Although there are many other things that I like about the game (the story, well rounded characters, actually engaging battles, etc.), these are the main things that set this game apart for me. I was disappointed when FFIX oversimplified the card game (and yet, complicated it with the cards having HP and levels and whatnot) and the switch from a card game to that annoying water sport in FFX. I like the traditional elements in other FF games, but such breaks from the norm as FFVIII and FFXII make me giddy for the lack of the repetitious, for something unique within familiar trappings. Tonberry? Check. Summons? Check. Mix of sci-fi and fantasy? Check. Cid? You betcha.

A great entry in the series, and far too often dismissed/overlooked.

Different but good (2009-02-10)
While Final Fantasy 8 may not be your typical image of a ff game because of its more modern era and setting and the use of cars it is still a great game. Many people may not like it because its not your typical ff and goes against the grain so to say by having these elements along with many others like no MP the abilty to drastically modify any character the way you would like, and stats being raised by juncitoning, etc. Yes square has continued the ff7 theme of trying new things but overall i believe it was a success. the game is still very fun to play for a true ff lover and has a good storyline. If you would rather play the typical ff pre modern era game then go and play ff9 and quit complaining about this one if you dont like it its YOUR problem not ours.

Classic (2009-01-24)
I usually hate games where you have to run around a lot and get into 4534 battles every two minutes, but FF8 is definitely worth playing. The turntable battle style makes it stay interesting, and the use of Aeons to protect you when you're in a stitch. The graphics are great considering it's a PS1 game. I'd consider getting the game guide a long with the game, it helps a lot. I didn't and I haven't played in a while so I completely forgot what I was doing or where I was going, and talking to characters didn't really help, aha.

Also a GREAT GAME! (2009-02-25)
I'll try to keep this short by just saying things that stuck out to me:

1) The story is pretty good. A little familiar to the plots of FF's... oh, 1-5 maybe, but good. There are definitely enough differences.

2) Levelling up isn't that hard, but learning abilities can be a little annoying. You level up by the equipping armor/weapons that teach them. So if you come across, let's say, a more powerful magic wand for your black mage that teaches... let's say Flare but you haven't fully learned Osmose (and these are just examples), you need to keep the first one till you get enough AP to learn it without that weapon. Hopefully that makes sense; I know it's been somewhat of a hindrance to me when I play.

3) The music is definitely good... but I think 8's is better--though I like the regular-fight music more in 9 than in 8.

4) Summoning isn't possible until I think either the tail-end of Disc 1 or the beginning or so of Disc 2.

5) The ending is FANTASTIC. Kinda long though.

Overall, I love this game. It's well worth buying!

I have been a fan of the series and this game just continues with the greatness!

FF!X (2009-02-13)
It is one of my favorite FF's. I have been playing it since the day I got it. Love the story line and the characters. just wish you could use the eidelons sooner. I always love using them. But, still enjoy it, muchly.

TIRED OF HATE REVIEWS (2009-02-09)
NOW LETS JUS GET REAL RITE QUICK...FOR THE LAST COUPLE OF MONTHS I BEEN ACHING TO PLAY FINAL FANTASY 8 AND 9. I FINALLY GOT TIRED OF ACHING AND ORDERED THESE TWO GAMES TO PLAY SINCE THE LAST TIME I PLAYED THEM ALMOST 10 YEARS AGO...[...].
ALL THE FINAL FANTASY'S ARENT THE SAME AND THEY ARE NOT A CONTINUING STORY WHATSOEVER. THEY ALL BRING THEIR OWN FEEL AND GAMEPLAY STYLES. JUS BECAUSE ITS NOT WHAT U LIKE OR PREFER DOES NOT MEAN ITS A BAD GAME. I PERSONALLY LIKE THE DIVERSE FEELINGS U GET FROM EACH OF DIFFERENT FINAL FANTASY'S U PLAY. I HONESTLY FEEL THAT 7 IS ALOT OVEERRATED TO ME, BUT STILL A HELLUVA FUN GAME. I PREFER 8 AND 9 OVER ANY OTHER FINAL FANTASY GAMES. BOTTOM LINE, INSTEAD OF RANTING ON HOW ITS NOT LIKE 7 OR 1-6, EMBRACE THE DIFFERENT FEEL OF IT, WORK WITH THE DIFFERENT COMBAT AND UPGRADE SYSTEMS. THEY ARE ALL FUN AND GREAT IN THEIR OWN SPECIAL WAYS.

Best in the series (2009-02-01)
Final Fantasy 9 is the best game in the entire series. Granted, its graphic quality isn't as great as 12 and the upcoming 13, but storyline, and just truly feeling pulled into the game, makes this game the best. In its time it was a landmark in quality upgrading! It was my very first video game when I was 6 years old, and continues to be my favorite and most treasured collection.

Without any question, one of the top 5 Greatest Games Of All Time (2009-02-03)
This is up there with Ocarina of Time, FFVII, and a few other such gods of the gaming world as those beautiful games that are the greatest ever made. They don't make 'em like this anymore. All I can say is, play this game. The story will change you forever, the experience will sweep you away. Playing Chrono Cross, hearing that melody of the opening cutscene and seeing and starting playing through that first area....the beach, the little seaside town....is as transcendental an experience today as it was a decade ago. If you never have experienced it, you need to.

best attacks to use on Lyxn (2009-01-28)
Here is list of the for beast attack use on that annoying boss Lyn.
Best moves to use for fastest wins
First best move frost blast from guile does 86 health points damage depending on your level and equiptment status
Second bes sage movies cross slash can do 61 health points damage. Wanding from guile dose is decent also does 68 damage
Third best movie sages Imbessla does 54 health points damage.
Lynx has 700 to 1000 hp so this might take away.

CHRON CROSS (2009-01-24)
Bought this as a request for a friend's son who asked for it for Christmas, it worked perfectly, arrived on time and he is an avid player of it.

A Game That Stands The Test Of Time (2009-01-06)
This is a fairly old game for the now outdated Playstation, but if you are an avid fan of RPG's, then this is a game for you. Set as a sequel to the one of the most innovative RPG's to hit shelves, CHRONO TRIGGER, this game deals with the same elements (no pun intended), Love, Death, Parallel Dimensions, and of course, Time Travel.

You start the game as Serge, the silent protagonist of the game. He awakens in his coastal hometown of Arni in the El Nido Archipelago. Serge goes out to his local beach to collect some Komodo Scales for his love interest, Leena. After a rendevous with said love interest, an event occurs that changes Serge's life, and possibly the outcome of the entire planet's fate. The rest.........well, you'll just have to play the game for yourself to find out.

So in my opinion, this is one of the greatest RPG's ever following closely to the amazing FINAL FANTASY VII and CHRONO TRIGGER, the game's prequel. The battle system was refreshingly new for the time that it came out, using a 3-tier attack system. The magic system, called elements, are equipped rather than learned, and can be used only once in the battle. However, multiple of these elements can be equipped at once. The music is top-notch and has actually won quite a few awards despite being a video game soundtrack. Superb. The graphics, although not THE BEST, were still very good for the time, and a tad more realistic, following along the lines of FINAL FANTASY VIII, and especially good during the FMV sequences. Along with multiple endings and somewhere around 40 playable characters, expect to invest quite a few hours into this game.

the only downside in this game, in my opinion, was that some of the key items were a little difficult to find at times, so you might expect to be aimlessly running around the world map wondering, "Where do I need to go now?" Other than that, CHRONO CROSS is a game well worth its GREATEST HITS status. CHRONO CROSS is definitely a game worth buying, and I recommend it to anyone who are fans of CHRONO TRIGGER......or just fans of good RPG's in general.

Great Game of the Past (2008-11-22)
Whenever I first played this game many years ago, I enjoyed every minute of it. Now is not any different. From the great gameplay to the endless hours one can spend playing this game, this game truly shows how the oldschool games never truly get old. This game makes sure that it is almost impossible to level up to insane levels like in other RPG's, thus giving this game enough of a challenge to make players think more often than usual. In addition, this game puts in enough action and adventure to make any RPG fan never want to put down the controller. In conclusion, if you want a great RPG that has great replay value and is guaranteed to give you a challenge, this is the ideal game.

Editorial Review
Long recognized as role-playing games par excellence, the Final Fantasy series gets a technological makeover in this installment (and series debut on the PlayStation). Shedding the two-dimensional graphics and limited sound capabilities of its predecessors, Final Fantasy VII features lush 3-D graphics, beautifully animated "movie" sequences, and soundtrack-quality music. Coupled with the game's intricate storyline, endearing characters, and immense yet highly imaginative world, these new advancements make for a quite an engrossing experience.

The story of Final Fantasy VII centers around a solider named Cloud Strife, who joins forces with Avalanche, a group of resistance fighters, to take down an evil mega-corporation known as Shinra. (The fate of the world hangs in the balance, of course.) Truly epic in scope, this four-disc game requires a considerable amount of time to complete---this reviewer gladly gave up over 80 hours of his life to finish it. But it's definitely a rewarding adventure that every PlayStation owner should consider undertaking, especially since it's now one of the low-priced "Greatest Hits" titles. --Joe Hon

Pros:

  • Intricate and absorbing storyline with endearing characters
  • Immense and highly imaginative game world
  • Special battle system
  • Beautifully animated movie sequences

Cons:

  • Your friends and family may feel neglected

Amazing Final Fantasy VII (2009-02-21)
of course everyone is familiar with the FF series, personally i love them all and it all started with FF VII which was the first Final Fantasy i played...need my opinion? it's AWESOME!!

Talk about overrated. (2009-02-12)
Since this was the first pure Rpg I had ever played, there were alot of things I found really neat about Final Fantasy 7. I liked most of the secondary characters and found their plot development well executed.

That being said, this game has one of the worst protagonists ever. Cloud. The reason he doesn't take the top honor of this? Because there are far worse protagonists, one of them being Squall. I guess emo kid Protagonists just don't do it for me.

It also relies very heavily on plot, that came before it (in that it shamelessly rips off 6 and previous Final Fantasies to the point of hilarity) in order to stand on it's own merits. Most Final Fantasy 7 rabid fans, probably couldn't actually play this game, due to the fact it's frankly no longer pretty enough for them. These are the same people that will try, in vain no less to convince you that X is a great Rpg. (and boy is that one TERRIBLE at the end.. don't get me started on the sphere grid, love story... anyway back to 7)

If Final Fantasy 1-6 had never existed and 7 was original I'd have a much higher opinion of this game, but between the rip off nature and Cloud it really kind of drags the game down for me. I never quite got the hype, yes there are a few characters that still stand out as pretty neat, Vincent and Cait Sith, Red XIII, Aeris, Tifa and Cid. But almost everything else is miserable. Even the Iconic of Bad Guy Sepiroth Yeah I've seen better since him. Far better.

I wouldn't recommend this game really, there are much better things you can do with your money, such as Xenogears, Final Fantasy 1,2,4, and 6. Final Fantasy Tactics, IX, or even XII.

An Epic Adventure! Definatly ONE of the greatest games EVER made! (2009-02-04)
Its been a decade since this game has been released & all i can say is 'wow'. This game gets soo much praise (and well blasphemy too) & even has been hailed as 'Quite Possibly The Greatest Game Ever Made', however that's not possible, only to those who think this is the greatest game ever made. But i urge people to try this game out, despite the outdated graphics & no voice overs.

You start off as a mercenary, an Ex-Soldier named Cloud who is working with a group named 'Avalanche', a team of members who infiltrates Shin-Ra's biggest Mako city, Midgar. Mako is destroying the planet & Avalanche (known as hippies or treehuggers) is trying to stop that from happening. What Cloud doesn't realize is he's closer to Shin-Ra then he thinks. And a mysterious man known as Sephiroth suddenly attacks Midgar after a tragic event that took place in.. Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII

Cloud must search for this man as he deals with Shin-Ra & the Turks. All while he tries not to lose his sanity.

Ok in my opinion the best way to un-cover this story is to play the first half of Crisis Core (until you reach Nibelheim) then start playing FFVII (this game) until after you get past the part where you find out about Zack. Then go back to Crisis Core, beat that then finish FFVII. It doesn't really matter what game you play first & vise versa but if you play this game all the way through it pretty much spoils the ending for Crisis Core. Although i still think it was exciting to see the ending in higher graphic quality i just knew what was going to happen.

Anyways on with the review..

Story 10/10:
The story for this game is superb, although it lacks a few minor details that not even Crisis Core reveals it still has one of my favorite story-lines in the entire history of videogames or movies. I do recommend you play this game before Crisis Core (before Nibelheim) just because Crisis Core reveals what really happens to Cloud & then this game won't really keep you interested. Besides that though i really think this game is still considered one of the best!

Graphics 6/10:
The graphics for this game was superb when it first came out. No one still really cared too much about them yet & Square really showed them off for this game (this game was originally in production for the N64) except for the fact that you have blocks as hands! I believe the main game for the N64 wasn't completely scrapped as they were trying to make this for that system but then realized the potential of having CG clips for the PlayStation they went with that system instead. So for those wondering why the graphics look so cartoony in this one, im pretty sure thats your answer. The CG movies still look amazing for the ps1, granted that Square got better at it with FFVIII. Either way, Square is trying to get the original team from this game to pull off a grand remake (to make this game look REALLY NICE) which is still in question, however they have other games they're working on now

Gameplay 7/10:
Well, lets just say that its not hard but its not easy, of course the actual battles are fairly simple if you know what your doing. And leveling up your characters & materia are the only main factors you have to worry about in progressing in the game. The problem with moving your character around is that your fumbling around with the directional sometimes because its not quite calibrated right. Or its just the camera view, however its annoying at times.

Music/Sound (10/10):
I enjoyed the music from this game, i still think it's one of the best ones Square did. Everything from the Bombing mission to Cid's theme this game has it done perfectly! Another good reason why Square wanted this game on the PlayStation, crystal clear stereo sound!

Concept 6/10:
While it took me several times to go through the game (and beat it) which for some people who don't understand the story will have to play it through a few times. The thing that people get most confused on is the materia setup. While it was easy for me to grasp some people were like 'huh!?!?' It's like trying to teach a cat how to drive. I thought this concept was easier then some of the FF games that came out after this one. But yet again, easy for some, hard for others.

Replay Value 10/10:
Personally i think this game should have had a new game+ function (where you can go through the game again with stats, materia, items ect. But maybe if Square gets a remake going they'll throw that function in. Only because i never get tired of this game & its one game that does deserve a remake.

Overall, i did give this a full 5 star rating only because i still think this game is the best, despite its problems. And for those who haven't yet check out Crisis Core as well, great prequel to this game.

The best Final Fantasy ever! (2009-02-02)
Final Fantasy 7 is the best verson of the game I have played, games before it were good, but games after have been lacking in enjoyable of play, too complex game play or just bad plots have made me keep going back to playing FF7 instead of anything since.

Best RPG Ever (2009-01-31)
I have to name this the "Best RPG Ever". It set the standard for RPGs going forward. The graphics, story, scope, and action were all ground-breaking. It made the PS1 a viable system and Sony is now a major player in the video game market.

Despite all the accolades and achievements, this is a fun game. Its dated now, but I can still find enjoyment in it.
